Hernia Bowel Preparation

  • Drink clear liquids only the day before surgery. No solid foods. Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before the operation.
  • It is important that you continue taking your prescription medicines before your surgery. The only medicine that should be stopped is those that cause bleeding. Examples of these are: coumadin, heparin, lovenox, plavix, and aspirin. If you take any of these on a regular basis we will need to check with your medical doctor before stopping them.

If you are a diabetic you will need to consult with your medical doctor about how to manage the medication while you are taking the bowel preparation.
  • At about 4-6pm the day before surgery, you should drink a full 8-10 oz. of Magnesium Citrate. This can be purchased in any pharmacy without a prescription.
  • The day of surgery you can take your prescription medications with a sip of water. NO other food or fluids.
